REVIEW: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

"Chirrut Imwe's beach holiday didn't go as planned!"
Lucasfilm and Disney took a risk to try something a little different with regards to the Star Wars movie. Not afraid of ruffling feathers with fans, the Star Wars universe gets an expanded look at the events that occurred after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith but before Episode IV: A New Hope. The Jedi are all but gone, Obi Wan is in hiding and the Empire is doing a fantastic job at taking over the galaxy. Young girl, Jyn Erso is quietly living with her dad, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and her mom. When he turned his back on the Empire after helping them build a gigantic space station known as the Death Star, Galen took up farming on a quiet planet. Quickly realising they need Galen back to finish their evil plan, the Empire despatch Orson Krennic, complete with white cape and black armoured Deathtroopers to convince him to return with them. After initially declining, preferring windmills to world domination, Galen realises that he has no choice, and after giving time for his daughter to escape, he reluctantly goes with them. During this debate, Galen’s wife decides to take matters into her own hands and it doesn’t go well. Galen leaves, wifey is dead and little Jyn hides away. Fast forward a decade and a half later and Jyn is now an adult (played excellently by Felicity Jones) and, after being broken free from prison by a group of rebels, she is reluctantly dragged into the intergalactic war that is facing the universe. With a smattering of cameos and nods to other aspects of the Star Wars universe and, of course, featuring Darth Vader every now and then (James Earl Jones reprising his iconic booming voice), Rogue One brings with it everything you want to expect from a Star Wars movie. Amazing and arresting visuals – some of the battle sequences are stunning – Rogue One starts off slow and then goes for the jugular and by the end of the exhilarating ride you are trying to catch your breath. But, for all that it is a Star Wars film, with suitably sounding names like Cassian Andor and Churrut Imwe, it is a bit different too. For example, it is a lot darker – people die, and, dependent on your opinion, there is also no opening crawl either!

Star Wars music is suitably done (but not by John Williams for the first time!) and there is no famous anthems until Darth Vader appears. Those expecting lightsabers and Jedi will also be disappointed though there is a spattering of such throughout the movie and references too. The new characters are introduced to us are likeable and memorable and fit very well within the universe. We have Captain Cassian Andor, brave and fearless Rebel pilot/soldier, Baze Malbus and Chirrut Imwe (guardians of the Jedi temple) and Bistan (who is in more trailers than the film) among others and the new characters all have their own motivations and reasons for fighting. Also featuring Forest Whitaker as Star Wars Rebels character Saw Gerrera, Rogue One has truly a roster of people to keep you occupied until the end. As expected the new droid, K-2SO (voiced excellently by Alan Tudyk) is like a cross between C-3PO and Marvin the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and often steals scenes he is in. The coolest character by far is Chirrut Imwe, a blind Jedi Master, who is able to fight and defeat many opponents even though he cannot see. The bromance between him and Baze is clear and they always have each other’s back.

Overall, Rogue One is different to the Star Wars we know, but maybe it is time to do that so we don’t get sick of the franchise. It’s a fresh take on the Star Wars universe but fits snugly within the narrative that is so ingrained in society that it feels organic. This movie was a risk for Disney but has paid off and is a great addition to the films we are getting. It sets the bar high for the next ones, and also kinda makes up for the poor prequels from the turn of the century. Worth a watch more than once so you can see it with a clear head the second time, as the first will blow you away. Slow to start but unbelievably exhilarating at the end, Rogue One certainly puts meaning being the term calm before the storm.

REVIEW: Nerve (15)

$200 to go to the city? Seems legit...
Social media – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram and so on – is now all around us. Some of the generations of humanity remember a time when it didn’t exist – when people sent letters through the post, got birthday cards and a knocked on someone’s door to see them. They didn’t post a status, sent a “selfie” or followed them. Sometimes, because it’s so easily accessible, people think, that by posting something, it’s harmless. But you know what? Social media can be dangerous. And, it can make or destroy you depending on what’s posted. As a blogger and vlogger, I use social media every day to inform and discuss.

But not all of it is great. Sometimes though, something comes out and goes viral. And this could be a meme, a song, a video or… a game. Such examples include Candy Crush, Farmville (am I showing my age here?), Clash of Clans or, more recently, Pokémon Go.

Nerve is a movie all about the above.  Set in the near future, an unknown conglomerate of hidden persons known as the Watchers create a game called Nerve. A cross between Twitter, YouTube and truth or dare, Nerve is a game whereby you can either be a) a watcher or b) a player. If you are a watcher, you pay to watch the constantly streaming show. Apparently it’s $19.99 for 24 hours access which is expensive, I reckon. Anyway, as a watcher you can like the people who play, recommend dares for them to do and post comments as they are doing the dares. If you decide to become a player, then you play Nerve – where you are given a dare to do and if you carry it out you get more likes and a financial reward; but the dares get increasingly stupid or dangerous, but the money goes up. The top liked people get to a “final” where the winner gets to walk away with loads of money, fame and probably a fan club. The players are always being videoed and stalked by the viewing public, and to complete a dare the player has to record the dare on their individual mobile phone or similar. Also, you get quite famous so I guess you could see the appeal.
Now, after explaining all that, young lady Venus (who is known as Vee in the movie cos she’s cool and never uses her full name) is a plain, boring, non-stand out, book reading, non-risk taking young lady. Loving her photography hobby (especially of taking photos of the local football team and one guy in particular) and keeping in the background, she is overshadowed by her best frenemy and Nerve player, Sydney (Emily Meade). Sydney is an interesting character but is someone I think the film wants you to feel sorry for but she is written in a way that is hard to like.
When the gang get together at a local fast food chain, Sydney states that Vee (Emma Roberts) should be a bit more risk taking as you only live once and what have you. Vee is dared by the group to go over to talk to said football blokey but is too shy to do so, so Sydney goes over instead to ask on her behalf. Football boy replied that she’s not his type (he’s stupid – she’s stunning) and this breaks Vee’s heart and she runs for home, both upset at finding his feelings out but also angry at Sydney. In a not quite clear motivation (is it because of her getting back at Sydney or does she want to prove she’s brave or both) she signs up for Nerve and becomes a player.
What follows is a thrill ride backed by a techno soundtrack (which is actually quite good) and outlined in neon. Playing the game of his own accord but crossing paths with Vee is Ian (played by Dave Franco of Now You See Me fame) and both actors have a great rapport with each other. As Vee’s dares start off fairly easy she is knocking them back like no-ones business and is coining it in. But when things start to take a turn for the sinister she breaks the games rules by trying to get the police involved and finds there are not only watchers and players but a third option - prisoners of the game too. How is that for a cautionary tale?
Featuring Juliette Lewis as Vee’s mum as a nice surprise, Nerve is an original, tense action thriller which could have been rubbish but is actually really, really good. The scariest thing about this movie is that it’s so well written that this situation is so close to reality that the scary thing is, this could actually happen.

REVIEW: The BFG (PG) - 3D Version

"The sun always shines on BFG" - The BFG could be an A-Ha fan...

Legendary director Steven Spielberg and award winning actor Mark Rylance find themselves working together once again in the live action remake of Roald Dahl’s classic novel, The BFG. Starring Rylance as the titular character and relative newcomer Ruby Barnhill as the matter-of-fact, insomniac orphan Sophie, The BFG is a gigantic fantasy adventure for all ages.

Based on the bestselling book from the Dahl archives, The BFG is all about orphan Sophie who wanders around at night in an orphanage because she cannot sleep. One night she is distracted by noises outside and inadvertently sees a gigantic man tiptoeing through the streets. In order to keep his existence secret he pretty much kidnaps her and takes her to his home in Giant Land (somewhere a little further north than the Outer Hebrides) and keeps her in his house. After somewhat of a Stockholm Syndrome situation (or as the film portrays it an unlikely friendship blossoms between the two) the Big Friendly Giant and Sophie explore issues that include being so small in a big world and how to deal with bullies.
Fantastical in the classical sense, The BFG is at times silly and over the top but it somehow fits in with the movie and the sort of whimsical far-fetched imagination a child would come up with. It makes me think that, for all an adult’s imagination is limited by sense and the laws of the world, a child’s is not tied down by logic and a background of reality. Anything can happen, even if it doesn’t make sense or is over the top. The BFG is like this – it thinks nothing of going to see the Queen or calling in an army to help with bullies – this is fantasy at its up most.
The giant’s world is breathtakingly done, as we see it from Sophie’s perspective and some of it (especially in 3D) is overwhelming making you feel as small as Sophie is. Not only that, but he might be a Big Friendly Giant, but in comparison to his people, he’s actually little.
Overall the film is quite good, staying true to the book. Rylance does a great job at creating a loveable character – sad in some respects but wise in others. Even his confused and muddled language is brilliantly performed and I give top marks for his acting skills. Barnhill, as Sophie, is great as the sassy little girl and the dynamic between the two is brilliant. Elements of the movie, especially when the both go out to explore and catch dreams is clearly influenced by such classic literature as Alice in Wonderland, and the effects and experience is great to watch too. There’s a few flaws here and there and questions to be asked (like there’s only so many giants on the land, but why are they all broad cockney and the BFG sounds like he’s from Cornwall or something) but overall an enjoyable kids movie.
The BFG is out now at all good cinemas.

This is, of course, based on the book by Roald Dahl, who also wrote other books including Matilda, James and the Giant Peach and The Twits.
Steven Spielberg and Mark Rylance worked together on this movie as director and starring actor respectively - and, in 2015, both worked the same on the Tom Hanks fronted Bridge of Spies (which I reviewed here).
My favourite gourmet popcorn brand, Joe & Seph's released a limited edition Frobscottle flavoured popcorn to celebrate the release of this movie. A sharp blend of caramel, mint and raspberry it was certainly an interesting flavour!

REVIEW: MOVIE BLAST: Now You See Me & Now You See Me 2

Now You See Me

Louis Leterrier’s 2013 movie Now You See Me is part bank heist movie, half thriller.  Four struggling magicians (each with a unique talent) are recruited by mysterious business man, Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine) to become the greatest magical quartet of all time. Also starring Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Jesse Eisenberg, this movie certainly has star power.

The magicians become The Four Horsemen and become famous after a massive show becomes wold renowned after a spectacular bank heist – and the proceedings go back to the audience in true Robin Hood style (i.e. rob from the rich, give to the poor). After they turncoat on their benefactor at the second act and steal his money to give to the audience (themselves victims of their benefactors company), the FBI are on the case. Mark Ruffalo plays an FBI detective who joins forces with Interpol’s French female officer, Alma Drey (Melanie Laurent). Always one step ahead, The Four Horsemen are planning their biggest show yet. Meanwhile, their antics attract the attention of Morgan Freeman, who is hot on their tails too – to create a multi-faceted storyline and a surprising conclusion.

Full of funky magic tricks, action and excitement, NYSM is a great watch and has a good twist at the end. The cast is fantastic and kept me watching ‘til the credits roll – but stay because there’s another bit in the middle. My only concern is that they did not spend very much time on the Four Horsemen themselves, and this would be nicer as they seemed to have a good comraderie and I think it would have been interesting to see more about them. A great movie.

POPSCORE: 8/10

Now You See Me 2

Now You See Me 2 is once again more of the same from (just about) the same cast as the first one, with the replacement of Isla Fisher with Lizzy Caplan as the sassy Lula, the newest member of the Horsemen. They talk away Fisher’s absence assigning the reason to a falling out with Jesse Eisenberg’s character Atlas – and introduce Caplan’s character as a fan of the Horsemen who wants to be part of the gang with her unique magic tricks too. However, I don't know about you, but surely they missed a trick - this film should have been called Now You Don't.

It’s more of the same story too, set around 18 months after the events of the last movie.  The Horsemen are brought out of hiding to perform a show to bring down a tech magnate and it gets all very Mission: Impossible meets Ocean’s Eleven (or Ocean’s Four or Five in this instance) and leads the viewer on a path through some mind-blowing magical tricks with some action and adventure thrown in the mix.  However, the magical tricks the team use are verging on them actually having superpowers and are a little less believable than the previous film, but it’s still fun none the less.

Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, also appears in this movie and, although he is sporting an impressive beard, he still seems very Harry Potterish. This is even to the extent that Woody Harrelson describes him as some sort of man-boy in one scene. Speaking of Woody Harrelson – his performance in this movie is fantastic and makes an already great movie even better – especially when we are introduced to his twin brother Chase (who is also played by Woody Harrelson… with hair!).

So yes, I really liked this movie and I would love them to make another sequel – it could be a franchise as I think there’s plenty more to go from here. Ruffalo, Caine and Freeman return with their characters too and, although the ending is nowhere near as twisty as the first movie, it leaves it open for another part to come. There’s only a few niggly bits with this movie – including unforgiveable continuity errors, but watching it for what it is – a bit of fun and excitement with a bit of ooh-ing and ahh-ing thrown in – makes this a magical show worth a watch.

REVIEW: Independence Day: Resurgence

We will not go quietly into the night...

In the current climate of reincarnating and rebooting beloved movies, 1996’s seminal disaster movie Independence Day gets a sequel 20 years later – and probably at least 15 years too late. Original director, Roland Emmerich (Hollywood’s go-to guy for disaster movies) wants a piece of the reboot pie – and brings back (most of) the original cast and some new characters to the fore. However, it seems that to make a sequel, Emmerich thinks that by hiding a very weak (and convenient) story behind mindboggling special effects, a blockbuster it will make.  To a certain extent and to a certain type of audience this may well be true, but for the rest of us, we have a weaker sequel desperately out of time, hanging onto the coattails of a ground breaking original.
I loved the first movie and using talent like Will Smith, Jeff “The Goldblum” Goldblum and Bill Pullman was brilliant as they are all fantastic actors. Sadly, Will Smith doesn’t reprise his role as we are suggested to that his character has been killed in a test flight and is no longer part of the team. However, those who are disappointed in this can be rest assured that they have cast a suitable replacement as his son – who is basically a cardboard cut-out likeness of a younger Smith but without the sass and Smith-ness that we come to expect from him. However, we could have had Jayden Smith as the heir to the character, but based on his previous performances in other movies I think we dodged that worry.
New cast members are younger, as if taking the reins from Goldblum and co. and such whippersnappers include Liam Hemsworth. He heads up the next generation, fresh from the Hunger Games and does a good job. The remaining young ‘uns are all there to tick off boxes really – token black guy (the Will Smith dude), hot Chinese girl for the geeky sidekick and the girl who becomes the love interest for Liam’s character. Goldblum and Pullman reprise their roles and great comic relief from Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Brent Spiner add some gravitas and links to the previous film, but although it goes some way to smooth the ride, it’s still not enough to let it stand aside its predecessor.
The story goes that 20 years on, Earth has learned to put aside its differences after winning the war against the aliens – and we have been using their technology to bolster earth should they return (which Goldblum is convinced they will). As we need something to happen in the story, of course, they come back! However, the technology is better and we are again in a hopeless situation – and what follows is what you would expect – and that is where the film isn’t as good as it could have been.
The biggest problem is that the movie is a basic paint by numbers of a disaster movie/sci fi invasion movie with overwhelmingly convenient moments to help the main characters out.  And, like previous Emmerich movie 2012, the characters face certain doom on multiple occasions but the 1% chance of survival ALWAYS comes through. As a result you are left with an ‘on the edge of your seat’ style movie without the tension because you know the characters will always survive. It also has an undercurrent of patriotism and a little bit too much of “yay, America” -this sentiment might have worked in the 90’s but the world has moved on from such isolated views (maybe).
Overall though, even though it has its faults, it’s an enjoyable sci-fi/action adventure – a bit predictable but very exciting even so. Worth a watch, I reckon.

REVIEW: Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

Kate Moss is CHANGING HER PR!

After Dad's Army (previously reviewed on this site) the next uber popular TV series to get the movie revival treatment is Jennifer Saunder's classic British sit-com, Absolutely Fabulous. For the fans of the show it's more of the same, but for everyone else that's where it stays.

The movie starts with Edina Monsoon living the high life in London in a posh house resplendent with a swimming pool and swanky décor. However, she falls on hard times when her sources of revenue dry up and now needs some money desperately. When eternal best friend Patsy arrives to cause her usual chaos, comedy ensues. Older and less wiser, the infamous duo hatch a plan when Patsy finds out supermodel Kate Moss needs a new PR person. Believing she is right for the job, Eddie goes to the do and tries to speak with Kate. As usual chaos ensues and she knocks Kate off the ledge she was sat on and into the Thames below. After a frantic search Kate is nowhere to be seen, and believing her dead, Eddie has the finger pointed at her for what happened. Cue a movie that involves escaping to a foreign country (France actually) as these two go on the run.

The story is simple and the movie is peppered with the great and the good from both the fashion industry and British TV - and nearly every scene has a cameo in it. It's great to see Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones Brianne/Capt. Phasma from Star Wars) as her original talent at being a model (even someone shouts out that there's Brianne from GoT!) and other people besides.

Absolutely Fabulous was a great innovative TV show in the 1990's and I watch many of the episodes. This movie is just like an elongated episode with a bigger budget but the similar premises and characters. Although it is generally amusing, there weren't many laugh out loud moments and I felt that some of it was a bit too daft. It seemed like something Jennifer Saunders had to do - and it felt like she just got all of her famous friends together to have a laugh without anything too deep or meaning full. The best parts are where Patsy (Joanna Lumley) leads everyone astray and you are never sure what she will do next.

Overall, it is mildly amusing and has some great cameos, but the TV series is much better.

REVIEW: Pokemon Go (Game: IOS/Android)

Gotta Catch 'Em All!

For a long time now, pushing two decades, Pokémon have been one of the most iconic creatures of modern times. Like the words karaoke and karate, Pokémon is a culmination of two words - Pocket and Monsters - Pokémon - and the likes of Psyduck, Pikachu and Charmander have been popular ever since it's inception.

So what better way to celebrate my 100th post on my blog, than reviewing my first game AND the hottest mobile game on the planet - Pokémon Go.

Pokémon Go is the latest Pokémon game from Niantic, where a mobile device is used to track and capture Pokémon just like in the games and TV series. Harnessing the power of GPS and augmented reality, the game actually has the player moving around their locale and finding Pokémon all over the place. Complete with the ability to use Pokegyms and supply points known as Pokestops, Pokémon Go seems to be the game to get players off their butts and into the wider world.

Initially only available in select countries - this being mainly American and Australia, Pokémon Go was a hit as soon as it was available. Some clever mucking about led to people in other countries discovering how to download it on their phone too - and it worked just as well. However, it's now been released in more countries - including the United Kingdom, so more people than ever can try to catch them all.

The game itself is quite simple - select your starting "trainer" and this will be your avatar. It's not terribly detailed, but you have a canny few selections of hair colour and outfits, and then it's time to play. Selecting one of three starting Pokémon, the player then is ready to go out in society to capture them.

Each Pokémon that is discovered is stored in a Pokedex so you can follow which ones you have caught or not caught. Some are rarer than others - and when they do appear there is sometimes some craziness descending on a location to try and get one.

Basic gameplay is thus - you move around as you would in real life and your phone tracks where you are via GPS. If there is a Pokémon nearby you will be informed and you can try and catch it with the limited amount of Pokeballs you are supplied with. If you catch it, it goes into the Pokedex and you can then adjust the Pokémon such as changing it's name, making it more powerful or levelling it up. By doing so it makes the Pokémon better - and this will come in useful later in the game.

As you progress, you yourself, will level up as a trainer. When you level up, you open up more opportunities which include accessing Pokegyms (which are usually local landmarks) where you can fight others Pokemon and guard the gyms for your team. Yes, you can also join a team when you are the correct level and the whole game becomes more of a capture the flag operation. You can choose from three different teams, all with different philosophies, and each one is a colour - the colour of the Pokegym will determine it's affiliation.

Along the way you will also need some supplies which can be gleaned (randomly) from Pokestops which are scattered around the area. These can give you more Pokeballs, eggs or other goodies and can be taken advantage of once, then a cooldown period will ensue. After that you can return and take advantage of it's goodies again. A church near me is a good Pokestop and is typical of structure you would expect to be a Pokestop. For those who want more convenience there is, of course, a shop where you can buy extra stuff from if you want to pay for it - but this game can be enjoyed freely without the need for this if you do not want to part with your cash.

I mentioned eggs earlier and this is another interesting point - you can hatch Pokémon from eggs! If you have an egg incubator (you start with one but can buy/earn more) and have an egg - you can place it in the incubator and "hatch" it by clocking up the relevant distance on the pedometer and get a standard to rare Pokémon to add you your collection.

The game is addictive but more so innovative in that it gets you out and about. Nintendo have been so quiet of late and are no strangers to innovation. When it works, it is ground breaking (reference: The Wii) and when it doesn't, it just fades away (eg: The WiiU). This latest offering could be a glimpse into the future of video gaming - actually being involved in the game this way, even only simply, is qute the experience.

I know we are getting Virtual Reality (VR) headsets in the near future and we are taking all those steps towards the sci-fi futures promised by our past, but this is a cheap and fun alternative while we are waiting for such things.

I applaude Niantic for such a clever game and although it's brilliant right now, it will be interesting to see the longeivity for it. For now though, let's just enjoy a game that gets us out into the sunshine and experience the outside unlike a Call of Duty or FIFA 20xx wouldn't be able to. In a nutshell, this game is innovative, unique and addictive - all the stuff you would want from a game. However, please be very careful while playing it as people have injured themselves while trying to get pokemon in silly places.

Pokémon Go is available now for iOS and Android phones from the relevant App stores.

REVIE: Alice Through The Looking Glass (PG)

Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) returns in the sequel to one of the top ten films of all time, Alice in Wonderland. Disney go all out to try and recreate the curious magic of the first movie and it starts off promising as all the cast and characters reunite in the first one, including a few lines of dialogue from the late Alan Rickman as Absolom, the Blue Caterpillar/Butterfly.

Starting a scene in battle between ships in a sequence that would not look out of place in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Alice is captain of her father’s ship Wonder (which she got involved with at the end of the last movie). As she attempts the impossible (rather successfully I might add), she returns to London safe after a few years away on the high seas. Seeing more of the world than her wealthy counterparts, she visits her employers, including wealthy bore-merchant Hamish, whom she declined to marry in the first movie. Still with his nose out of joint after last time, he has caught her in between a rock and a hard place and gives her two options – the ship or her home. Alice’s mother is all for Alice giving up her ship, but Alice isn’t so sure. After being forced into a decision, she declines both and runs off to be by herself. As she starts to cry over her hopeless situation, Absolom, the blue butterfly, attracts her attention as she is needed in Underland. She jumps through a mirror (which for all intents and purposes is “the looking glass” of the title) and finds the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is dying and needs her help. As all of Underland backs her to go back in time to find the Mad Hatter’s family to save him, she must try and “lend” a chronograph from Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen) to sort it all out. However, it doesn’t run as smoothly as that.
Alice 2 (as I will call it now) suffers in that although the characters and actors from the first movie remain, the story itself is a run of the mill adventure and lacked the necessary thrills and skills that would classify as a classic. It does its job but lacks something but I don’t know what.
Afterwards we spoke of the movie and we concluded that maybe it was because the original tale is so iconic that this one was always going to be a struggle to live up to the next one. However, for all that the nonsense of the original, this one was a more straight forward adventure. Some strong acting from the cast and some thought provoking lines of dialogue, but over all a just above average move. Disney have done better in the past.

REVIEW: The Secret Life of Pets (U)

The Secret Life of Pets is the latest offering from Minions/Despicable Me production team Illumination Entertainment. Proving that they don't just do Minions well, The Secret Life of Pets is a cute, funny adventure movie in a similar premise to Toy Story but with... Pets. Before the film starts we are treated to a Minions short which is quite funny. Then it's time for the movie...

Pets, as I'll now shorten it to, features main mutt Max, adored by his owner Katie and has a cushy life in a high rise flat in Manhattan, New York. When Katie goes to work, the pets get up to a variety of activities and hang out together at various places. Consisting mainly of dogs and cats - apparently they can live together - the pets also include budgies, fish, Guinea pigs and tortoises. Max's world is turned upside down though when Katie (ever the dog lover) brings home another dog she found at the pound. Looking like a doggy Chewbacca, this huge doggy soon takes over the flat, mainly because he's quite large. Duke, as he is known, is immediately on the wrong side of Max and tensions flare.

Max manages to get the better of Duke and ends up blackmailing him to behave, and when they are out for a walk with a dog walker Max asks... Nay demands Duke to get him a stick. Duke entices Max to go over with him and they get separated from the other dogs. As they do, the world of New York opens to them and sends them both on an adventure to get back home.

There is a stunning array of characterised animals in this movie, and, as Max and Duke head deeper into the city, we find stray animals that are adorable but evil, sinister and even ugly. However the movies strength is that the actions of the animals really fit with how they would probably act in real life. The scene stealer - megalomaniac, evil but oh-so-cut bunny Snowball (voices amazingly by Kevin Hart) is a joy to watch and the supporting cast do a good job too. What I found, personally, was that the movie did well at developing these animals but the least time was spent on Max and Katie themselves which felt kind of strange. It was kinda a bit at the beginning and a but at the end for them.

Featuring some amazing animation (the water looks so real I almost went to get a towel) and the furs of the animals were realistic too, this show how far computer animation has gone since the mind blowing, forward thinking of Toy Story way back when. The soundtrack is really good too with a sweet power pop tune heralding the start and an interesting interpretation of a song from Grease.

Overall this movie was very good and I really enjoyed it. It was a little slow in places and some tweaks here and there would have made it awesome but as it is it's a really enjoyable film and will make you think twice before you leave your little fur baby at home to go to work.

The big news this month is Ghostbusters (2016) is being released and I've got sneak preview tickets for Sunday 10th July - which means I get to see it before it is released - and  I'll give you a review as soon as I get in.

I'm feeling a lot better so we will be having more updates - and don't forget to follow me on Twitter on @paulandpopcorn for up to the minute ramblings and chat - and feel free to contact me to talk about films and geeky stuff and that.

However, as this links to the current games, if you click the link it is the current games available and maybe not what's available now. Remember though that all the Xbox games have limited availability and are yours to keep once you have purchased them. However, some are only available at the beginning of the month, some at the end and some longer than that. Generally though, there are some games for the first two weeks and then a different set two weeks after, so you need to move quickly.

Every Xbox 360 game that is featured on Games With Gold from now, is now backwards compatibly with Xbox One which means the Xbox 360 games above WILL work on your Xbox one. They are adding new games all the time, so keep checking to see if you can use any of those old 360 games again on your shiny new Xbox One.

Speaking of PlayStation - the PlayStation VR comes out in October - exciting times! I must get to try this and see what all the fuss is about.

REVIEW: Me Before You (12A)

Daenerys Targaryen and Meville Longbottom are dating, maybe. After 7 years together and stuck in a small town; Louisa Clark (Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke) gets her last paycheck as a waitress and then finds herself unemployed. Her struggling family which also includes sister Katherine (Dr Who's Jenna Coleman) and dad, granddad and mum all are encouraging her to get a job. When a rich, handsome, castle owning 30-something William Traynor (Sam Claflin) is injured in a traffic accident leaving him a as quadriplegic, his mum and dad (Charles Dance) seek to employ a carer-cum-friend for their lonely, heartbroken and disillusioned son. His and Louisa's fates cross thanks to the job centre and she becomes carer for him. Initially very reticent about the whole arrangement, both parties reluctantly work together but find out they can both teach each other a thing or two about life.

This movie is an emotionally charged rom-com - one part com, two parts rom and is really well made. Emilia Clarke looks so different to her Game of Thrones character which is a testament to her acting talents and Jenna Coleman makes for a perfect sister to her in the movie. Sometimes she overdoes the smiling and grinning and loves her eyebrow acting (like Chris Pratt ;-)) but overall is a great movie. The chemistry between the leads is fantastic and you really feel for them. The film's soundtrack is great too - with uplifting instrumentals and careful use of no less than two Ed Sheeran songs, it just adds to the experience. With a smattering of stars from both silver and small screens and an absolutely fabulous cameo from a great English actress, Me Before You is one film that tugs at the heart strings and won't let go.

Really, really good.

Me Before You is out 3rd June at all good cinemas.

REVIEW: X-Men Apocalypse (12A)

The X-Men reunite for a final foray to conclude the Bryan Singer trilogy started by X-Men First Class and then, by default, meets up almost with the 2000 smash hit X-Men. X-Men (2000) was a movie that redefined superhero movies as genuinely good movies... rather just an exercise in punching baddies and over powered people in brightly coloured suits. Unlike that particular part three, X-Men: The Last Stand, this trilogy's conclusion is well, how shall I put it? First class.

Well balanced with chatty exposition and interspersed with action, this movie continues 10 years on from the 70's to 1983. Various X-Men are doing their thang - Erik Lensherr (aka Magneto) is now earning a living in Poland and is a family man. A number of mutants are still fretting about their place in the world including a girl in Egypt who can control the elements and another lady who sports an amazing latex purple outfit.

The movie starts though many years before - in fact in Egyptian times - where some dude with powers (we discover is Apocalypse very shortly into the movie) is getting on a bit. In order to keep him living forever he must take the life force of a younger, stronger person - human or mutant, to continue on. Apparently if he snaffled a mutant he also gains their abilities. A suitable host is found - a very unconscious Poe Dameron (Oscar Isacc) who draws the short straw and gets shlucked up by the evil megalomaniac. I'm joking, it's not Poe Dameron but is certainly the same actor. Even back then he has four horsemen and some of the people take umbrage to this shucking of people's souls or whatever it is so end up destroying the place he is performing the ritual and he's buried under rocks until some silly people on 1983 decide to bring him back. Once he returns the quest is on for him to find four powerful mutants to take on the world as his four horsemen.

Meanwhile some lad is having problems at school with his eyesight, goes to the toilet and zaps the wall with his eyes - so his brother Alex, take him to Professor Xavier's school for the gifted to help him control his eye lasers. This is where we meet most of the others including Jean Grey (Sophie Hunter - Sansa from Game of Thrones), Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicolas Hoult reprising his role) and a Chinese girl  I would put money on is Jubilee but is never name checked.

Mystique returns and is out and about and discovers Angel and Nightcrawler and that is pretty much the main selection of characters. Until Quicksilver appears too. Other mutants are referenced or mentioned with one notable cameo; but the roster, as you can see is huge. For all there are many of the it does a good job of trying to balance them all. Sadly the new additions to the roster - like Storm, Psylocke and Angel aren't very well developed and Storm is never mentioned by name. Nightcrawler is great comic relief but it's hard to take him seriously with a very stereotypical German accent and a jacket right out of a Michael Jackson music video.

Jean Grey is played well by Sophie Turner, at times looking like she's raided Dr Beverly Crusher's wardrobe for inspiration. McAvoy and Fassbender are great as usual and they have settled into their characters well and made the characters as believable in their younger years as Stewart and McKellan have in their later ones.

As the film approaches it climax, it does not disappoint. The film is great and I really enjoyed this one. My only complaint was that some of the dialogue was very predictable. For example there seem to be a lot of sentences with a long pause in the middle of then and you just knew what they were going to say.

Unlike Prometheus, which seemed to shoe horn the aliens reference in within 10 minutes in the end of the film, this movie is different. Singer seems to have really thought out the links to his original movie so it all goes together. This is Singers episodes 1,2,3 and they are all really very good movies. Maybe this one is the worst of the three but saying it like that does not mean it is a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination.  Overall, a strong conclusion to the latest X-Trilogy and will be up there with the best.

X-Men Apocalypse is out now at all good cinemas.

REVIEW: Pandorica (tbc)

Welcome to the near future where disaster has befallen the Earth and tribes of people have become commonplace. Every so often; a leader is elected from eligible tribespeople. Their mission is to enter the forest and complete trials; and the victor becomes leader. Only one will come out alive.

This is the starting premise for director Tom Paton's low budget sci-fi dystopian movie Pandorica. Featuring a small but talented cast, the movie focuses on the three chosen to take the place of current leader Nus (Luke D'Silva). Taking up potential leadership duties include Eiren (Jade Hobday), Ares (Marc Zammit) and the impressively bearded Thade (Adam Bond). Nus suggests they are all unworthy; but the challenges have yet to come. As they delve deeper into the forest it is clear that there's more than just the quartet who are in the forest - and not all things in there are friendly. If you mix The Hunger Games with the Blair Witch Project and add a smattering of Predator you have Pandorica.

Sterling work by the actors including an over the top, genuinely unnerving Bentley Kalu as fearsome warrior Nine, Pandorica is probably the best low budget, British movie I have seen since the excellent Dog Soldiers way back when. Special mention also goes to both the cinematography and the soundtrack which are both fantastic.  For all that it was a fairly small production, the film could rival any of those big budget movies we see all the time. Focussing more on character and story than special effects, Pandorica is a sci-fi thriller that is simple but effective.

There are plans for a sequel too; so it will be interesting to see where this rich world of characters will take us next. Overall a really well made enjoyable film.

Pandorica comes out at all good cinemas on 1st April 2016 but simultaneously on Blu-Ray, DVD and download at the same time.

I saw the world premier at Sci-Fi Weekender 7 in Wales.

REVIEW: Divergent Series: Allegiant

With the whole Young Adult (YA) dystopia trend in full swing now, The Divergent Series : Allegiant is coming hot on the heels of the Hunger Games conclusion. Based on the third book in the Divergent trilogy; this movie has not only been changed from the book but also, as would be expected, been chopped into two parts. However not diluting the whole shebang into parts one and two, the clever boffins at the studio have instead decided to call it the Divergent Series and give part two it's own title too. So for the readers of the book - well they are confused. As for the people who just watch the movies - they think it'll just be like a Twilight style quadrilogy. Thing is... Is it any good?

It's a good sign that all the original cast return to continue on with the franchise. Shailene Woodley reprises her role as Tris, looking as cute as ever. Theo James is the brooding Four, who really doesn't have that much to do this time around except get frustrated and be eye candy for the girls. Some whippersnapper takes over the Eric type role and Miles Teller is back as mouthy Peter. Backing up the rest is Naomi Watts as Fours mom and Tris's brother Caleb who is about as as much of a liability as a 1980's Dr Who assistant. The newcomers include one Jeff Daniels as the solo named David who gets to dress Tris up in white and spend a lot of time talking with her.

Now I must say I'm a massive fan of the books. It's been a long time since it's taken for me to really get emotionally involved with a series of books like this. I love Tris and Four (as characters and as a couple) and I love Veronica Roth's writing (and the books as a whole). The story overall is fantastic and therefore I was excited to be seeing this on the big screen. However; although, now settled into their roles and the actors do a grand job, the film isn't really that good.

I don't know whether this is down to my expectations from the book or what but it seems like there's a lot of talking and a lot of running about. To me, it suffers from that which other "part ones" that have gone before it - in that the source is one book; one story and they want to two part it. But the actual source only probably stretches for about a movie and a half. You want the big reveal in part two so part one has to be stretched out to accommodate movie length. So, like Harry Potter, Twilight and especially Hunger Games, the part one contains much needless filler and waffle to pad it out ready for the next one. Strangely the movie just ends with no sort of pointer to say they will be making another one.

For those that have read the books - you will have seen most of it in this movie but the changes mean that if there was such a sequel coming next year, we won't have a clue what they will be doing unless they pretty much recycle this story (if they are following the book timeline).

Overall the cast do a decent job but this movie just doesn't quite get there. It tries but fails. Probably the worst one so far but here's hoping it picks up in the next, and final, instalment. As a Divergent fan I'm hoping this is the case.
Divergent Series: Allegiant is out now.

REVIEW: Deadpool (15)

After many, many debates on whether this movie would be made, Deadpool finally hits our screens and hits it does. Ryan Reynolds has stepped up to the plate twice now in his attempt to break into the superhero genre as a superhero himself. As well as featuring for Marvel in Blade II as Blade’s sidekick, his first real outing was actually as Deadpool in the luke-warmly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. Although it was generally in the lower rated echelons of superhero movie opinions, the Deadpool portrayed there had his mouth sewn shut and was a complete waste of a character much loved by many. As if to rub salt into the wounds, or maybe take a distance from Marvel, Reynolds defected to DC to star in similarly panned Green Lantern which may have had a decent run as a franchise if it wasn’t so badly made and relied on too much CGI. Although Ryan Reynolds is a likeable guy and a great actor – he plays smarmy, arrogant or wisecracking as you require it. So he would be the ideal choice for Deadpool. But, he’s already had two strikes – this one needs to be the home run. And do you know what? It is!

This new Deadpool movie is all what you would expect from a movie and more and is full of blood, guts, gore and one liners. Some of the insults are both creative and zany, and with the inclusion of X-Men’s Colossus, it adds a flair to the proceedings. Poking fun at everything it can and highlighting it via quips and jokes about poo, death, blood and just about everything else, Deadpool is a Marvel movie unlike any other but also as you would expect.

Once again, as expected, this introduction to the character is an origin movie and charts the wise-cracking Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) in flash back format from two-bit mercenary for hire to the Merc With the Mouth. The film slams straight into the action as Deadpool takes on a multitude of enemies and proceeds to tell backstory while doing it. Once up to date, Deadpool carries on from where we left off in the most basic story of revenge, but the quips, special FX and soundtrack (which includes some Wham! and Salt 'n' Pepa to name but two).

Even though it is a very different Marvel movie (the closest to it would most likely be something like a Blade movie or The Punisher) and not yet a part of MCU, all the hallmarks of a Marvel movie are there – ties to other movies (in this instance the X-Men) and, of course, Mr Stan Lee features as a cameo. With added self referential items – which without giving anything away do include said X-Men mentioned above among other things, this movie is all a Deadpool fan would want. With a strong supporting cast and a funky soundtrack to boot, strap in and enjoy the ride as Deadpool is your host on this Marvel’s version of Taken. It’s a great start to 2016’s bumper crop of superhero movies to come but it’s set the bar high.

Of course, you have to stay to the end of the credits because it’s a Marvel movie isn’t it?

REVIEW: The Hateful Eight (18) - 70mm Roadshow Format

Quentin Tarantino returns in his eighth movie, The Hateful Eight or The H8ful Eight. Boasting an impressive cast (and some stalwart Tarantino regulars), The Hateful Eight is an epic quasi-Western with a run time of just over 3 hours including a 10 minute interval. I was lucky enough to visit the Odeon in London’s Leicester Square, so was in the fancy room that they all do the premier’s in. As it has the benefit of lovely curtains and fancy seats, I think the 70mm Panavision Roadshow presentation was complete and the best way to watch it, rather than at my local down the road. It felt more theatrical to me in this way. However, let’s cut to the chase here, we must talk about the movie rather than the fact I was in a swish cinema environment.

As we entered we had the benefit of a programme (included in the ticket price) which told us more about the unique way in which Tarantino had presented this movie, a style in which has not been done since the 1960’s. The movie is broken down into chapters, not unlike other films of his, and after a rather lengthy “overture” by legendary music maestro Ennio Morricone we are out in a snow coated landscape and a stagecoach powering through until it is stopped by a very cold and snow covered Samuel L. Jackson.  After taking him on board, the stagecoach travellers the hangman (Kurt Russell with a 'tash to be proud of) and the prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh), head towards Red Rock so Kurt can take his prisoner to hang for murder. As the trio continue, they encounter Chris Mannix (Walter Goggins) who claims to be the new sheriff of Red Rock. Reluctantly they give him a ride and as snow storm comes in, they hole up at the establishment known as Minnie’s Haberdashery until it all blows over.

From there we meet the other four of the eight – including Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and two others. However, the whole movie from there evolves into a thriller/whodunit and is specifically stays within the confines of the cabin they are all trying to shelter from the storm from. This set up lends itself to a more theatre-style presentation with Tarantino overtones. The first half of the movie is heavy on typical Tarantino banter, a lot of it inconsequential or merely to get a glimpse of the characters motivations. It’s not until the final throes of part one – where Samuel L. Jackson’s character breaks into a big speech with a shock ending. By the time you return from the 10 minute interval, you are ready to see the conclusion to this set up that has lasted the length of the first part.

The Hateful Eight is a worthy addition to the Tarantino productions; complete with all the hallmarks you would want if you are a fan. For the casual viewer, however, it is high on banter but low on action until the last quarter of the film. Although many films would do a similar thing, the last quarter of this movie is after 2 hours and 15 minutes, which is longer than the average movie. I always have been a fan of Tarantino’s work and appreciate that he tries to do things a bit differently – playing around with genres (like From Dusk Til Dawn) or timelines (Pulp Fiction), and his creation of the art of conversation. All of these things are included in his latest movie, and so is his ongoing creativity
and attempt to make cinema not just a night out but an experience.

Well acted, different and contains all the hallmarks of a Tarantino movie, The Hateful Eight is another great Tarantino movie that is worth a watch – especially at a cinema. However those accustomed to action my find it a hard slog as much of it is talking until the final quarter which gets a bit more exciting, Overall, a great film.

The Hateful Eight was presented at most cinemas (except Cineworld) and is available in 70mm roadshow format and normal format too.

BYTE: Merry March

I'm Paul ... and this is Paul & The Popcorn...

Welcome to a merry March - and I hope it is so for all of you!

Firstly I must apologise for the lack of updates - my computer has been playing funny, then it decided to pack in and with working lots and being on adventures I haven't had time to fix it. Obviously I have now so there'll be some reviews up and posted over the next few days.

Last month we had Deadpool (review soon as I've seen it 3 times now!) this month we have the muchly anticipated Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Wow! And we've got London has Fallen, Grimsby and Allegiant (part one) to look forward to among others.

Although I visited Middlesbrough Comic Con back in February (I need to write that one up as well, jeez I'm slacking) the first epic one of the year for me is the one in Wales - the Sci Fi Weekender, which we have been going to for about 5 years now. This year guests include Garrett Wang (from Voyager), the ever lovely Eve Myles (she's beautiful inside and out) and the oft imitated but never bettered, the legend that is Brian Blessed! I'm really looking forward to this one and a two part review will come in time. And, if my new video camera comes, you might even get a You Tube video. if you are going there, say hi!

Later in the year I'm looking at visiting other 'Cons and on my hitlist include Destination Star Trek in Birmingham in October and The London Film & Comic Con by Showmasters in July. The latter stars Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and others while the former celebrates 50 years of the Star trek frnachise and includes cast members from all of the series AND prop and set shoots. Wow!

Origin has another game on the house which is Need for Speed: Most Wanted still -  so get it now before it's gone forever. As always you need to have an Origin account to get this. if this game is on your Most Wanted list, then now's the time to take advantage.

Origin have a new thing out called Origin Access which is £3.99 a month to play their games and you can cancel at any time. I need to look into this further but it looks pretty cool if you have the time to do it. If you check it out - let me know.

BYTE: Fab February

I'm Paul ... and this is Paul & The Popcorn...

Welcome to a fabulous February - and I hope it is so for all of you!

As we power through to February we have a lot of things to look forward to - Valentine's Day is one, maybe. But let's sack that for now and check out the movies this month.

Heralding the new superhero movies of 2016 and onward, Ryan Reynolds leads us astray with Deadpool - the much awaited movie from 20th century Fox - however he's already had two stabs at being a superhero both of which failed. This is his third chance - but will it be his last?

It seems Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to dominate the cinema and I visited the D-Box at my local cinema. It was an interesting experience which took you right into the movie. I literally felt every explosion, laser blast and swoop of the spaceships. Overall it was a nice touch, but I think 5 pounds added to the ticket price and the length of time it was throwing you around is nice every now and then but would not be my regular planned cinema outing. One of my friends didn't really like it and ended up sitting in a vacant seat that wasn't D-Box enhanced, but for the adventurous ones among you, you should try it out - even if just once.

I mentioned about a video camera to do some unboxings on YouTube and I tried doing one but sadly the video camera I got for Christmas was of terrible quality and could have done better on my old Samsung Galaxy S3. I was very disappointed with it and have sent it back, but still waiting on my refund to replace it and then I will continue to try and make a video. However, I really enjoyed doing it so was gutted that the picture didn't work out. I WILL try asap, and I'm really excited about trying to give this editing software a try.

Let's get to the computers then -

If you are interested in Steam games but want to expand your horizons from just the triple A rated blockbusters and have a peek at other offerings - including indie developers, you could do no worse than checking out a SteamCrate. It says that each game is worth at least £3 and you get 10 random games each month - which could be anything from the latest releases to goodness-knows-what. I have subscribed to this and I'm going to do a review soon - so keep an eye out for it to see if it is worth it or not. They give you a 10% discount if you subscribe to their mailing list too, so it's worth doing that if you want to take advantage. I've been subscribing to this for a few months now and I'm fairly understanding of the type of service they offer. I am going to do a separate review next month breaking the box down so look out for that.

Looking at the latest stuff as well:

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month includes the usual selection of games, rather than list them I've included the link that's in blue.

>  PSN: PS Plus this month has another selection of games but usual rules apply in that if you stop your subscription those games'll stop workin'. I know this to be true because it has happened to me. However, simply subscribe again and poof! by magic they work again. Also, this is the link to where to download the games, which means that although there's a certain set this mont, if you click the link next month there will be different games on offer - so get in while you can.

Origin has another game on the house which is Need for Speed: Most Wanted -  so get it now before it's gone forever.

As always we have Loot Crate and Nerd Block unboxings to look forward to...
...AND Marvel Collector Corps is officially Deadpool!

It's time to go now but -  I'll see you soon.
Keep being awesome!
Until next time

Paul
