REVIEW: Logan (15)

"Yep, 17 years of playing Wolverine certainly takes it out of you!"
It’s been a whopping 17 or so years (most places are touting 2 decades to make it sound more impressive) since the first X-Men movie hit our screens and proved two major things. These are a) that it’s not just Marvel that can actually make a brilliant superhero movie and 2) that the casting agency are second to none. Wolverine and Professor X are two roles that Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart were born for, and they made a perfect pairing then (and still do) in what my girlfriend called Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine retirement movie.

Taking elements for a number of different genres and recent movies, Logan never quite sits with its predecessors nor the MCU. As I watched I saw numerous echoes of movies I’ve seen before over the last few years. Elements of Mad Max: Fury Road, Iron Man 3, Skyfall, Deadpool and more, this is not particularly original but for fans of the character Wolverine, there’s plenty to be chewing on.

An older Logan is now driving a limo for the pleasure of others and an ageing Professor X is holed up on an old factory ground. Being a base of sorts for both mutants, they have a third mutant Caliban (Stephen Merchant) whom looks after the area as best he can. Relationships are strained, but they get along adequately for their needs. As the last remaining mutants, Prof X, Wolvie and Caliban keep their heads down.

This is not the end though, as a reluctant Logan picks up a ride and it turns out to be a nurse, Gabriella, and her mute daughter, Laura. Newcomer actress Dafne Keen plays Laura superbly with a mix of innocent cuteness and angry chaos. But they are not all what they seem. As the story develops this R-rated movie (clearly following in the footsteps of Deadpool) garrottes, decapitates and f-bombs its way through action and road trip respectively to take the seemingly innocent Laura to North Dakota where she can meet up with some people just like her.

Logan is a perfect send off to conclude the run of movies that started at the beginning of the century. Of course, there is a point at which the actors who play these timeless characters will need to pass the baton on, and this movie was the perfect vehicle to do this. Jackman and Stewart end their involvement with just the right amount of nostalgia, emotion and storyline to reach a satisfying ending. However, the movie also suggests something more on the horizon which doesn’t spell the end for the X-Men universe.
"Logan with his new wheels"
Logan is nothing like the other movies, and, although there are a few uses of superpowers, these seem to be more of a hindrance than a help. Logan himself is left in a rather weakened state but is still lethal, however limps around and coughs and splutters like Leo DiCaprio after he has been attacked by the bear in The Revenant. Although I realise that this is to show weakness on the parts of the two main characters due to ageing and being generally tired, sometimes it can feel a bit too laboured. I wanted Logan to suddenly get a new wind and start to fight like the old Wolverine. Although there are some scenes which are amazingly choreographed and are suitably grisly for the fact we have a guy with razor-sharp claws attacking someone, most of the movie is seeing a grizzled, beaten up Wolverine who is a shadow of his former self.

In a nutshell, this movie is stripped back, bare and shows powerful characters with their weaknesses. Not unlike the movie Mr Holmes, these characters have definitely seen better days. More story and more thought is in this one, which is in direct contrast to the action packed, fly with the action movies we are used to. It is still a good send off for some of the most beloved X-Men characters, though... until the next time of course.

BYTE: Jovial June

Welcome to June - yes, yes I know I'm a bit late and it's nearly over! but better late than never eh?

Awesome sentiment from Marvel.
Lots of turmoil has been happening in this world this month - and it's been very sad to see the events that have unfolded earlier on today. Also Patrick Macnee, wrestler Dusty Rhodes and Sir Christopher Lee all passed away over the last few weeks. Sad times indeed.

What's been going on? Well let's look at the movies first - the much anticipated Jurassic World hit our silver screens this month - and hit it it did - even knocking Avengers Assemble for six in the box office stakes. Chris Pratt once again took on his Marvel companions and beat them into submission with his Velociraptor squad. Featuring more than a few nods and homages to the original, Jurassic World is definitely one of the best movies of this year - and a worthy follow up to the ones before it. Check out my review here to see what I thought of it - and you can leave your opinion on there too.

Where's Owen when I need him?

I happened to be in London for a Piano Guys concert - and I reviewed that too. There was a big hoo-ha at Waterloo Station too - where Velociraptors were trying to break out of containment. So I did what anyone else would do - get a picture of them!

I visited the new Madame Toussaud's Star Wars exhibition in London and it was really rather good - however some over zealous customer broke Yoda's ear so we couldn't see the iconic little green man. I did however get to sit with Princess Leia and Jabba the Hut (I think they wanted to watch the Simpsons) and reached out to Darth Vader (see below) and saw an abundance of other Star Wars scenes and characters. This is featured at the end of the standard Madam Toussaud's experience and follows on from the Marvel 4D experience and the traditional wax works they are famous for.

"Luke! I am your fath..."
"I'll stop you there, mate, my name is not Luke..."
Other stuff I've been up to this month also includes getting tickets for the Sheffield Film and Comic Con - I'm gonna try and meet some wrestlers, a horror icon and goodness knows what else - but keep it locked here in August for a full rundown and some pics of what I get up to with that.  The line up for the London one looks like a fanboy (or girl) dream - but I can't make it this year due to spending all my money on subscription boxes, other cons and...

...The Smithsonian Rise of the Superheroes distance learning online course. I've just completed the 5 week course and I found it really interesting and fascinating. Professor Michael Uslan and none other than Stan Lee, take you through the history of superheroes and tell you about your favourites. Complete with videos, assignments and reading lists - this course is fantastic for people who love history, comics and erm, Marvel. It was the first time they ran this course so I'm in the first class alumni - but it was so successful they are running it again. If you pay for the course - which I recall was about $50 then you get an exclusive art print digitally signed by Stan Lee and Prof Uslan - and a certificate from the Smithsonian. You can also do it for FREE but won't get credit or the exclusive artwork. Originally it sounded like you would get the print as a proper signed piece of work - but later they elaborated to say it was an exclusive signed print - but it was done digitally. I was a little disappointed at this - but the course was really good and to be fair that was the only disappointment. I will do a review soon of it in full - but until then, why not check it out and join me as an alumni?

Looking at the latest stuff as well:

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month includes the full game of Thief on XBOX 360 and for the posh 'uns who have XBOX ONE you are treated to Pool Nation FX (still) and Massive Chalice (?!) to download free if you are a subscriber. Major Nelson posted July's offerings and they look very good indeed!
>  PSN: PS Plus this month you have Metal Gear Solid 5 and Skulls of the Shogun on PS4, Futuridium EP Deluxe and Super Exploding Zoo as a bundle for PS4 and Vita and Call of Jurarez: Gunslinger and Cloudberry Kingdom on PS3. As always you need to be a subscriber, and stay one, for these games to continue working.

If you are interested in any of these games you will have to get a wriggle on as they are valid until the end of June. Also out this month is the Arkham Knight special edition PS4 and there is talk of 1TB models being released for both PS4 and Xbox One. But the most surprising news of this month is that Xbox will become backwards compatible! That's right! Xbox One will play Xbox 360 games - the exact intricacies are not yet available but support will be added gradually. I'll let you know more when I get it.

As always we have Loot Crate and Nerd Block unboxings to look forward to...

...AND Marvel Collector Corps: Ant Man edition!

I've had a crack at doing an unboxing video - I'll tweet the link when I manage to understand how to edit. If anyone is good at this sort of stuff feel free to send me some tips!

Anyway I've wrote enough now - have a Jovial June and I'll see you soon.

Keep being awesome!

Until next time

EVENT: Newcastle Film & Comic Con 2015

The day is Saturday 28th March 2015
The time... is now!

A year ago, the first Newcastle Film and Comic Con ran by experienced Conventionites, Showmasters proved to be very popular indeed. Back then, my friend Mal and I waited nearly four hours to get into the venue and missed most of it. It was badly organised and felt the brunt of an unhappy public. In their defence it was the first one in Newcastle and they underestimated demand - especially those on the door purchases. On the other hand, sales for tickets stopped 2 weeks before so surely they would have had an idea of interest and capacity?

Fast forward later in the year when I attended the London & Film Comic Con in July 2015. This was much more organised and, in the main, I got to do what I set out to do - meet the Generalissimo himself, Stan Lee. An added bonus was meeting the legend Glenn Morshower but I was gutted I  missed my favourite cosplayer Ivy Doomkitty.  Such is the draw of these events.

The question was - had Showmasters learned their lesson and, more importantly, had we? This time we bought early bird tickets in advance (as opposed to last years buying on the door at the event). This proved beneficial as, when the door was opened, it only took about 20 mins to let us in from our queue position (which was a considerable way around the arena).

Busy day at Newcastle - and that was just the Early Bird tickets!
There were a lot of stars here today, but there were some cancelations - Red Dwarf's Robert Lewellyn and Craig Charles didn't appear as promised and Claudia Christian from Babylon 5 cancelled too. I was sad to find that there was only the sepia Back To The Future pic available at Newcastle (see my effort, right) and no DeLorean as anticipated. I couldn't complain though as KITT from Knightrider was there to waffle on at you.

Eve Myles signs a photo for me
When you go to a convention such as this everyone has their favourite person to see or go for. Each person charges a significant amount for a photo or a signed autograph so even to get a couple of items signed by a few celebrities would cost nearly £100. So unfortunately you have to prioritise (unless you have a lot of money and/or amazing time skills). The most popular person by far today was James Marsters who was charming and lovely apparently. Sadly I didn't get to meet him myself but he was very popular with the public. James Cosmo and Jeremey Bulloch (two people I've met over the last month or so) were also there.

My celebrity priorities were two lovely and very beautiful women I got to meet and to see on their relevant panels. The first was Terminator 3's Kristanna Loken. In her panel she discussed the training regime of becoming the Terminator and what it was like working with Arnold Schwarzenegger. She said the role of being in such a successful franchise had changed her life. She also said she was working on some new projects and mentioned some of her recent works. These included a movie called Fighting for Freedom which was a movie made from a screenplay written by her father and the upcoming erotic thriller Maid For You. Later I got a photo with her and got to meet her and she was lovely.

The second panel I sat in on was absolutely mental and I enjoyed every minute of it! Eve Myles, Gwen from Torchwood (among other shows), came onto the stage and had everyone spellbound from the start. She was taking questions and her familiar, laid back, giggly persona shone through and was both endearing and enchanting at the same time. She spoke of her best friend John Barrowman and the fun they had on set in Torchwood, about how she "didn't" take any props from the set of Torchwood, working with David Tennant and how gorgeous she thought James Marsters is. She spoke of motherhood, of her child and her love of the Geordie accent and had one lad repeating the word "theatre" over again as she loved the pronunciation of the word in that accent. Later, after the rapturous applause, I got to meet her and got a signed photo.

While I was there, I mentioned to her the first ever convention I went to. Back in 2012, she was at the SFX Weeekender 3 in Wales. I've been going to conventions ever since then. "It's all your fault I come to these!" I said to her jokingly after explaining about my Wales adventure in 2012. "I get that a lot..." she said, and added, "They kinda addictive aren't they?" And do you know what? She's right.

I'm getting quite fond of visiting these conventions and this was much the same of what I'd expect from a Showmasters con. There were a few minor disappointments - the lack of a DeLorean (especially since they are making a fuss of the 30th Anniversary of Back to the Future) and some of the guests pulled out. But these things happen. However there were some great guests today, entertaining panels, excellent cosplay and... we didn't have to wait half a day to get started.
A great comic con going from strength to strength - can't wait for next year.

You can also get your picture taken with some of the stars - here's me with the
very beautiful Kristanna Loken - and you get to take a picture home too.
