REVIEW: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

"Chirrut Imwe's beach holiday didn't go as planned!"
Lucasfilm and Disney took a risk to try something a little different with regards to the Star Wars movie. Not afraid of ruffling feathers with fans, the Star Wars universe gets an expanded look at the events that occurred after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith but before Episode IV: A New Hope. The Jedi are all but gone, Obi Wan is in hiding and the Empire is doing a fantastic job at taking over the galaxy. Young girl, Jyn Erso is quietly living with her dad, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and her mom. When he turned his back on the Empire after helping them build a gigantic space station known as the Death Star, Galen took up farming on a quiet planet. Quickly realising they need Galen back to finish their evil plan, the Empire despatch Orson Krennic, complete with white cape and black armoured Deathtroopers to convince him to return with them. After initially declining, preferring windmills to world domination, Galen realises that he has no choice, and after giving time for his daughter to escape, he reluctantly goes with them. During this debate, Galen’s wife decides to take matters into her own hands and it doesn’t go well. Galen leaves, wifey is dead and little Jyn hides away. Fast forward a decade and a half later and Jyn is now an adult (played excellently by Felicity Jones) and, after being broken free from prison by a group of rebels, she is reluctantly dragged into the intergalactic war that is facing the universe. With a smattering of cameos and nods to other aspects of the Star Wars universe and, of course, featuring Darth Vader every now and then (James Earl Jones reprising his iconic booming voice), Rogue One brings with it everything you want to expect from a Star Wars movie. Amazing and arresting visuals – some of the battle sequences are stunning – Rogue One starts off slow and then goes for the jugular and by the end of the exhilarating ride you are trying to catch your breath. But, for all that it is a Star Wars film, with suitably sounding names like Cassian Andor and Churrut Imwe, it is a bit different too. For example, it is a lot darker – people die, and, dependent on your opinion, there is also no opening crawl either!

Star Wars music is suitably done (but not by John Williams for the first time!) and there is no famous anthems until Darth Vader appears. Those expecting lightsabers and Jedi will also be disappointed though there is a spattering of such throughout the movie and references too. The new characters are introduced to us are likeable and memorable and fit very well within the universe. We have Captain Cassian Andor, brave and fearless Rebel pilot/soldier, Baze Malbus and Chirrut Imwe (guardians of the Jedi temple) and Bistan (who is in more trailers than the film) among others and the new characters all have their own motivations and reasons for fighting. Also featuring Forest Whitaker as Star Wars Rebels character Saw Gerrera, Rogue One has truly a roster of people to keep you occupied until the end. As expected the new droid, K-2SO (voiced excellently by Alan Tudyk) is like a cross between C-3PO and Marvin the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and often steals scenes he is in. The coolest character by far is Chirrut Imwe, a blind Jedi Master, who is able to fight and defeat many opponents even though he cannot see. The bromance between him and Baze is clear and they always have each other’s back.

Overall, Rogue One is different to the Star Wars we know, but maybe it is time to do that so we don’t get sick of the franchise. It’s a fresh take on the Star Wars universe but fits snugly within the narrative that is so ingrained in society that it feels organic. This movie was a risk for Disney but has paid off and is a great addition to the films we are getting. It sets the bar high for the next ones, and also kinda makes up for the poor prequels from the turn of the century. Worth a watch more than once so you can see it with a clear head the second time, as the first will blow you away. Slow to start but unbelievably exhilarating at the end, Rogue One certainly puts meaning being the term calm before the storm.

REVIEW: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (iMAX) 3D Version (12A)

In 1983, young people the world over saw the conclusion to one of the most quintessential sci-fi series of films ever known. They were introduced to the Ewoks, story arcs were completed and people went home satisfied. Names like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo became household names in reality and legend in the fictional universe. Since then, they have never really left our imaginations or pop culture. Darth Vader died in Return of the Jedi, but redeemed himself, and all was good in the world.

A few decades later, George Lucas decided to try and replicate the mania that was prevalent back after the first trilogy was released. In 1999, it came amid fanfare and you couldn’t go wrong with great actors like Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson could you? Er, yes, yes you could.

The “new” trilogy, Episodes I-III (Lucas loves his numerals) or “the rubbish ones” – whatever you would like to call it, seemed like a shameless cash in and a major step back for Star Wars as a franchise. There had already been an amassed back story both forward of the “original trilogy” and back. In keeping with the canon, Lucas had to go back – and retell the story before the characters we knew. Some of it hit home –Yoda was good but the CGI version lacked the appeal of the “muppet” version of the originals though. Darth Maul was intense but vastly underused and with the exception of the endgame of the first movie, was pretty much a redundant character. Anakin in the first movie was just basically a young Wesley Crusher, and the relationship between Anakin and Padme in the later ones, was just weird. And the biggest issue of all was a Gungan called Jar Jar Binks. Lucas had tried to recreate the Star Wars we loved but it just didn’t work very well, even though, I personally thought Episode III wasn’t really that bad.

Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney a few years ago for about $4billion and basically will never have to work again in about 150 lifetimes. Meanwhile, Disney thought about how they could do what they did with Marvel and turn a troubled franchise into something remarkable. First, they scrapped everything as canon, other than the new cartoon series and the movies. Which caused a bit of a stir – but the good thing was Chewie was still alive! They have kept this previous canon though and now refer to it as “legend” but is not part of the new storylines created henceforth. Which makes sense really since the future as written in the previous canon was getting cluttered and making a new movie to fit in with it all (except for making a book into a screenplay (which I think was bandied about after the conclusion for Episodes I-III)) would have been difficult to say the least.

Then, they drafted in JJ Abrams who had been rebooting the Star Trek franchise. I’m sure many fans, like myself, were concerned about this as the Trek reboot wasn’t bad, but could have been better and… what the hell is going on with all the lens flare? It was unnecessary and made the film seem shiny and distracting.  Social media was wondering about the movie – would it be more JJ Abrams or will it be more Jar Jar Binks? After something like a two year tease, on 17th December (or 18th depending) The Force Awakens opened…

…And broke every box office record in the galaxy.

The Force Awakens stars unknown actors John Boyega and young starlet Daisy Ridley as Finn and Rey respectively.  As you may not have seen the movie yet and may wish to I will try to avoid major spoilers but I will be telling you some things so you have an idea at what the film is about. If you do not wish to know, go down my review and read the final paragraph which is a conclusion about the film and will not tell you any spoilers.

Firstly I waited to see the iMax 3D version and it was a very good version indeed. The 3d was good (some cool parts where things fly out at you) and this is the sort of epic movie you would want to see in iMax.

If you are still with me – let’s go…

Possible light spoilers ahead - (skip to last paragraph)

The film begins with a Resistance pilot named Poe who has a funky droid called BB-8, and is seeking to find Luke Skywalker who has disappeared. As an attack force led by the mysterious Kylo Ren, Poe tries to escape. Meanwhile we see a stormtrooper tussling with his conscience – something we’ve never really seen before in a Star Wars movie - and this makes them more individual. The new Stormtrooper outfit is smarter and snazzier, and, like most of the equipment, vehicles and outfits in the movie, have been upgraded to a more modern look. X-Wings are now black, and TIE fighters look more swish – but are still as fast. Poe is caught, but BB-8 escapes to pass the message on.

There’s a slew of new characters in the mix too – Finn (the Stormtrooper mentioned above), Rey (a young lady who is great flying spaceships, using a blaster, a lightsabre, etc), Poe (who, sadly, has the same name as a Teletubby) and lovable droid BB-8 (who, let’s be honest, is R2-D2 for the social media generation). Backing up this glamourous new bunch include the old favourites Han Solo, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Leia and the droids, Threepio and Artoo.

For the bad guys there’s the wannabe Darth Vader - Kylo Ren (who’s got a history), General Hux (a fanatical with a crisp RP English accent that would make the BBC proud), a multitude of Stormtroopers (including one played by Daniel Craig) and a creepy hologram called Snoke (who is apparently a Supreme Leader).

JJ Abrams had a very difficult path ahead of him, but, like a Jedi (do there is no try) he has excelled himself in this movie. Minimising lens flare and sticking to Star Wars lore as much as he can, Abrams gives the yearning public the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back in 1980. The movie has elements of a paint by number Star Wars with an X-Wing sequence right out of Star Wars and other set pieces similar. What could become a generic rehash instead becomes familiar and makes it feel more true to the Star Wars feel of this picture.

Locations are built with the cast actually there, so there is a lot less CGI than you would expect – though it is necessary in a world full of lightsabers and laser guns.  The technology has been given a makeover – a bit like the difference between a Ford Escort and a Ford Focus – both are similar cars but one looks a bit more modern and swisher than the previous one.

Harrison Ford returns as ladies’ favourite, Han Solo, and it’s like he has been in character since Return of the Jedi as so comfortable has he slipped back into the role. The dynamic is still there with Peter Mayhew’s Chewbacca and they are a great sight to see on the big screen again. Chewbacca is fantastic – especially with some of the asides he does which are just fab. But the moment they both walk back onto the Millennium Falcon and Solo utters, "Chewie, We're home!" complete with that half smile of his, just pretty much sets the nostalgia chimes ringing.

The new cast do a sterling job of carrying such a weight on their shoulders and Princess (who is now General) Leia is woefully underused. BB-8, the new circular droid, fills in for the loveable duo of C-3PO and R2-D2, and, when all are on screen together they go from Laurel & Hardy to the Three Stooges. BB-8 seems more sonorous than the legendary Artoo, but both can share the screen without taking one from another.

Poe, the Resistance’s best fighter pilot, is introduced right at the start and has some cool moments, but, like Leia, is only in it sporadically and he seems a funky enough character who could give Han Solo a run for his money. Finn, the turncoat Stormtrooper, seems capable of great things but spends most of the movie hyperventilating and running away from things. This is a direct contrast to Rey, the heroine of the piece who can basically do everything and is good at everything which takes things away from her character a bit as she seems to be able to do everything the other characters can’t and then some.

Then we have the bad guys – leading the chase is Darth Vader wannabe Kylo Ren, resplendent in black with a funky lightsaber and a mask and voice that would rival Vader’s own. However, the mystery is not as shrouded as Vader was as we only have to wait half way through the movie to see him without his mask.

Finally, no Star Wars movie would be complete without a Death Star or something of that ilk and The Force Awakens doesn’t disappoint in this part either.

Spoiler over - (you can continue reading now)

In conclusion, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is clearly made by a director who both grew up with the franchise and adores it in equal measure. There’s enough similarity with the other Star Wars movies (by this I mean the original 70’s trilogy) to feel familiar yet enough difference to move it on and appeal to the next generation. There is a feel that this version of Star Wars reflects in the younger generation how their parents felt in the 70’s and 80’s growing up. The hype machine is in hyper speed and the merchandising is bordering on silly. But, the movie itself is a sturdy piece of filmmaking that is a worth addition to the franchise. This will go down as a classic in itself and make stars of the new actors representing the characters. The movie has shocks, twists, action and adventure, and that’s all you need in a good sci fi movie – especially Star Wars. I cannot wait for the next one, but the 30-odd year wait was worth it for this one. Well done JJ Abrams, you are now officially up there with Lucas, Spielberg and the other director greats. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out now at all good cinemas.

BYTE: Jolly January

I'm Paul ... and this is Paul & The Popcorn...

Welcome to a jolly January - and I hope it is so for all of you!

It was an epic 2015 for movies wasn't it? It started off exciting, got amazing, what with the Avengers and Ant-man and everything. Via a few comic cons and even TV show viewings, I finished off the year with no less than 4 screenings of the hotly awaited, Star Wars: the Force Awakens.

This year is just as exciting as we have some more Marvel movies - Captain America: Civil War is looking ace, and of course, another Star Wars movie to contend with before 2017 blows us away with it's offerings. Dropping by also will be Deadpool and DC's juggernaut Batman Vs Superman, and rounded off by a nice slice of Star Trek too.

Celebrations this year include 60 years of Batman (the camp 60's TV series) and the anniversary of Star Trek: the Original Series. So it's going to be an exciting year regardless. Added to that all the comic cons, action and unboxings - it's shaping up to be an exciting year ahead.

I've been blogging on and off for a year now, and I'd like to thank everyone who has been reading me. I got a cheap camcorder for Christmas so I'm going to try and do some vLogs too this year - which is something I'm not really accustomed to. But I'll have a go and you can tell me what you think.  it will complement this blog and my Twitter feed so hopefully it will give you enough new content to be getting on with.

Let's get to the computers then -

If you are interested in Steam games but want to expand your horizons from just the triple A rated blockbusters and have a peek at other offerings - including indie developers, you could do no worse than checking out a SteamCrate. It says that each game is worth at least £3 and you get 10 random games each month - which could be anything from the latest releases to goodness-knows-what. I have subscribed to this and I'm going to do a review soon - so keep an eye out for it to see if it is worth it or not. They give you a 10% discount if you subscribe to their mailing list too, so it's worth doing that if you want to take advantage.

Looking at the latest stuff as well:

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month includes:

XBOX ONE gives you:

Thief
Killer Instinct: Ultra Edition Add-on
Zheroes (from 16th Jan)

XBOX 360 gifts to you:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (from 16th Jan)

All the Xbox games have limited availability and are yours to keep once you have purchased them. However, some are only available at the beginning of the month, some at the end and some longer than that. Generally though, there are some games for the first two weeks and then a different set two weeks after, so you need to move quickly.

Every Xbox 360 game that is featured on Games With Gold from now, is now backwards compatibly with Xbox One which means the Xbox 360 games above WILL work on your Xbox one. They are adding new games all the time, so keep checking to see if you can use any of those old 360 games again on your shiny new Xbox One.

As always you need to have an Origin account to get this - but it's really worth the time to get this game as it's fab. If you like Knights of the Old Republic and the more recent Old Republic MMORPG you'll love this.

Origin have a new thing out called Origin Access which is £3.99 a month to play their games and you can cancel at any time. I need to look into this further but it looks pretty cool if you have the time to do it. If you check it out - let me know.

BYTE: Decisive December

I'm Paul ... and this is Paul & The Popcorn...

Welcome to a Decisive December, and, what's more - CHRISTMAS! The time for goodwill to all men - and of course children, women and animals - Christmas - however you perceive it, is the time to love each other, share that family time and generally try to make the world a better place. In January, the landscape changes to the new year and that is when we can start new, better habits and look forward to the year head, while simultaneously looking back over the journey we have come.

BUT! 2015 is not over by a long shot, even though, on the 9th December 2015 we still have a good three weeks or so of the month left. Lots of announcements for next year but the biggest thing this month is STAR WARS!

The hotly anticipated film number 7 of the unbelievably popular franchise is stirring emotions and the hype machine is in more overdrive than the Death Star crossed with a Borg cube! There's plenty of conspiracy theories, fan pics and suggestions and even curious things from the cast themselves but there's a few things we can be sure of - the original cast (where possible) is in it, and there is officially no Jar Jar Binks. I've got tickets for the iMax version in 3D - so I'll drop a review off as soon as I see it. Or near as!

Let's get to the computers - Star Wars has infiltrated this medium too with Star Wars: Battlefront - haven't played it yet but it looks great and has some great visuals. Looking like perfect match between FPS and our beloved Star Wars, it takes some of the iconic backdrops and allows you to take part in numerous battles the galaxy over. Is it any good? If you've played it - let me know in the comments.

The Steam Autumn sale has just recently finished and the new one, the awesomeness that is the Steam Winter Sale is (allegedly) kicking off on 22nd December. Save your money as there will be bargains aplenty.

If you are interested in Steam games but want to expand your horizons from just the triple A rated blockbusters and have a peek at other offerings - including indie developers, you could do no worse than checking out a SteamCrate. Rocket Birds: Hardboiled Chicken

Of course usual rules apply in that if you stop your subscription those games'll stop workin'. I know this to be true because it has happened to me.

* King's Quest is a five part game - I'm expecting you will have to pay for Chapters 2-5 - season pass is listed currently as £23.99.

Origin has another game on the house and it's Jade Empire: Special Edition - this was an awesome game in it's time so get it now before it's gone forever. UPDATE: 14th November 2015

<a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/14552703/?claim=w4zcd4mr6cw">Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a>

Hey everyone, just giving you an update on some things that have been happening around and about. I've just signed up to link my blog to Bloglovin (above) so if you are interested in when I update the blog and want to keep up to date on other blogs, feel free to click above so it can keep you in the loop and informed.

Secondly, Microsoft have released an update to the Xbox One which finally includes backwards compatibility. This is blooming awesome as it's something I personally feel very strongly about. I think having such a rich, diverse back catalogue as this should be available to play on the next generation - and I'm impressed that Microsoft have found a way to do this. Admittedly there are only about 100 games supported (most on XBL) but it's a start and more will be added. Speaking of XBL - don't forget to get the second set of free games if you are an XBL subscriber after 16th - if you haven't got the first set be quick - you need to get them now.

Star Wars fever is hotting up and in the cinema, 17th December to be precise! With the final trailer being dropped, the release of Star Wars: Battlefront and more merch available this Christmas than Scrooge has savings, this is guaranteed to be one of the biggest blockbusters in recent memory. It still could be rubbish, but somehow (at least I hope) that will be very unlikely, especially since it features the original cast.  Who is Kylo Ren? And what the heck is he doing with that sword? It all starts in a few days more than a month. Yes, that soon!

Mockingjay Part 2 comes out this week with the final part of Katniss Everdeen's trials and is still the YA dystopian franchise to beat. With the Scorch Trials (film two of The Maze Runner) merely luke-warm, how sparkling will the conclusion be to the much loved trilogy of books? Hot on it's heels will be the third Divergent movie - Allegiant in March '16, though it also may be split into two parts. Personally I hate this trend but, if they must they must I guess. I wonder if they made a quadrilogy would they stretch the movies to five?

Finally I would just like to take a moment to show respect to France and to those in Paris after last nights atrocities. My thoughts are with them and the whole world stands with you.

Be strong as the world unites.

Paul

BYTE: Jovial June

Welcome to June - yes, yes I know I'm a bit late and it's nearly over! but better late than never eh?

Awesome sentiment from Marvel.
Lots of turmoil has been happening in this world this month - and it's been very sad to see the events that have unfolded earlier on today. Also Patrick Macnee, wrestler Dusty Rhodes and Sir Christopher Lee all passed away over the last few weeks. Sad times indeed.

What's been going on? Well let's look at the movies first - the much anticipated Jurassic World hit our silver screens this month - and hit it it did - even knocking Avengers Assemble for six in the box office stakes. Chris Pratt once again took on his Marvel companions and beat them into submission with his Velociraptor squad. Featuring more than a few nods and homages to the original, Jurassic World is definitely one of the best movies of this year - and a worthy follow up to the ones before it. Check out my review here to see what I thought of it - and you can leave your opinion on there too.

Where's Owen when I need him?

I happened to be in London for a Piano Guys concert - and I reviewed that too. There was a big hoo-ha at Waterloo Station too - where Velociraptors were trying to break out of containment. So I did what anyone else would do - get a picture of them!

I visited the new Madame Toussaud's Star Wars exhibition in London and it was really rather good - however some over zealous customer broke Yoda's ear so we couldn't see the iconic little green man. I did however get to sit with Princess Leia and Jabba the Hut (I think they wanted to watch the Simpsons) and reached out to Darth Vader (see below) and saw an abundance of other Star Wars scenes and characters. This is featured at the end of the standard Madam Toussaud's experience and follows on from the Marvel 4D experience and the traditional wax works they are famous for.

"Luke! I am your fath..."
"I'll stop you there, mate, my name is not Luke..."
Other stuff I've been up to this month also includes getting tickets for the Sheffield Film and Comic Con - I'm gonna try and meet some wrestlers, a horror icon and goodness knows what else - but keep it locked here in August for a full rundown and some pics of what I get up to with that.  The line up for the London one looks like a fanboy (or girl) dream - but I can't make it this year due to spending all my money on subscription boxes, other cons and...

...The Smithsonian Rise of the Superheroes distance learning online course. I've just completed the 5 week course and I found it really interesting and fascinating. Professor Michael Uslan and none other than Stan Lee, take you through the history of superheroes and tell you about your favourites. Complete with videos, assignments and reading lists - this course is fantastic for people who love history, comics and erm, Marvel. It was the first time they ran this course so I'm in the first class alumni - but it was so successful they are running it again. If you pay for the course - which I recall was about $50 then you get an exclusive art print digitally signed by Stan Lee and Prof Uslan - and a certificate from the Smithsonian. You can also do it for FREE but won't get credit or the exclusive artwork. Originally it sounded like you would get the print as a proper signed piece of work - but later they elaborated to say it was an exclusive signed print - but it was done digitally. I was a little disappointed at this - but the course was really good and to be fair that was the only disappointment. I will do a review soon of it in full - but until then, why not check it out and join me as an alumni?

Looking at the latest stuff as well:

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month includes the full game of Thief on XBOX 360 and for the posh 'uns who have XBOX ONE you are treated to Pool Nation FX (still) and Massive Chalice (?!) to download free if you are a subscriber. Major Nelson posted July's offerings and they look very good indeed!
>  PSN: PS Plus this month you have Metal Gear Solid 5 and Skulls of the Shogun on PS4, Futuridium EP Deluxe and Super Exploding Zoo as a bundle for PS4 and Vita and Call of Jurarez: Gunslinger and Cloudberry Kingdom on PS3. As always you need to be a subscriber, and stay one, for these games to continue working.

If you are interested in any of these games you will have to get a wriggle on as they are valid until the end of June. Also out this month is the Arkham Knight special edition PS4 and there is talk of 1TB models being released for both PS4 and Xbox One. But the most surprising news of this month is that Xbox will become backwards compatible! That's right! Xbox One will play Xbox 360 games - the exact intricacies are not yet available but support will be added gradually. I'll let you know more when I get it.

As always we have Loot Crate and Nerd Block unboxings to look forward to...

...AND Marvel Collector Corps: Ant Man edition!

I've had a crack at doing an unboxing video - I'll tweet the link when I manage to understand how to edit. If anyone is good at this sort of stuff feel free to send me some tips!

Anyway I've wrote enough now - have a Jovial June and I'll see you soon.

Keep being awesome!

Until next time

BYTE: A-May-Zing May!

Welcome to May - it's spring time and summer is round the corner!
Time for some movie blockbusters MAYbe?

Well, let's be honest Avengers: Age of Ultron will take some beating. have you seen it yet? Finnally you guys in the US have got to see it too - and it looks like it's going to be a (Hulk) smash hit!  The next anticipated behemoth of a movie is Star Wars in December. But you don't have to wait that long to get a superhero fix as Ant-Man and Fantastic Four will be popping by over the summer. If you wap in the Minions Movie and the new "in-your-head" Pixar movie, we still have some things to look forward to.

It's been a crazy month so far with no signs of stopping. We are only three days in and we've had the birth of the royal baby - a little princess who is yet to be named. I'm going for Scarlett Diana, but who knows?

Sadly though, we've also lost people - the legendary Ben E King (famous for Stand By Me, one of my favourite songs from the 60's), the iconic writer Ruth Rendell and Rebecca Ferdinand, Rio Ferdinand's wife have all passed away the last few days. Sad times, and our thoughts at P&TP HQ are with their families. #RIP

There's a lot of stuff going on in this month too. Yesterday it was World Free Comic Book Day and I picked up quite a few free comics. I had picked up Secret Wars #0, and Avengers one, a 2000AD one and others at my local Forbidden Planet. Did you get to get some too? If not, don't worry - it happens every year so make sure you're up bright and early for next time. And, the following two days later (or tomorrow as I write this) is May 4th - which is Star Wars Day. I had to explain this to someone - May The Force... May the Fourth... oh never mind. If you are a member of Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG (like myself - unfortunately my character is called StarJediLord - sorry; but feel free to add ;-) ) they are doing some celebrations, so get logged on for some free digital swag, including, I hear, a free droid. Meanwhile if you are misty eyed about Knights of The Old Republic, the awesome game from a few years ago, Google Play is selling it on Android for the ridiculously low price of £2.33 (not sure how long for) - check it out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aspyr.swkotor

In the UK, on May 7th we are having a General Election, and, 5 years ago, I tried setting up a blog and my first post was all about it. Sadly, the blog never got past about 4 entries, and, as an homage to that, I might rerelease one of the movie reviews I did back then for you. I reckon, one of them was Iron Man 2 but I could be wrong.

Looking at the latest stuff as well:

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month includes the full game of Mafia II on XBOX 360 and for the posh 'uns who have XBOX ONE you are treated to Pool Nation FX (still) and Castle Storm Definitive Edition to download free if you are a subscriber.
>  PSN: PS Plus this month hasn't really updated just yet so nothing new to report on this front. Though you can get Destiny for £24.99 if you don't already have it.

If you want a free game for your PC, and you like the Ultima series, you can get a free digital copy of Ultima 8 by signing up to EA's Origin and you can download it for free - it's an initiative they have called "On The House". If you do sign up, they do this regularly so it might be worth keeping the account. We've had quite a few games already and my collection is building up - but most of them are older games, but still goodies. Hey, what do you want for free? Please note, though, I am not sure if this would work outside the UK but you could always have a crack to see if it does.

As always we have Loot Crate and Nerd Block unboxings to look forward to...

...AND Marvel Collector Corps!

Anyway I've wrote enough now - have a MINT MAY and I'll see you soon.

Keep being awesome!

Until next time

BYTE: Merry March

Hey guys

It's been the calm before the storm for me and a quiet week geek-wise. I've been mourning the passing of Orange Wednesdays at the cinema.  I have been trying to find out more about the tease of Compare the Market doing it - after seeing the meerkat advert at the cinema last week. No news has come forward so far so as soon as I find out I will let you know.

Meanwhile, on the movie front, I think I have not seen a movie this week! I'm so letting you down. However, Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer 3 dropped and is whetting our appetite even further. If you are eagle eyed, or good with the pause button, you will get to see a glimpse of The Vision at the end of the trailer. Also, I'm going to see the new Divergent film, Insurgent soon, so there will be a full review of that.

As for the blog and stuff, well, I've managed to add my logo to the blog, and I hope you like it. I'm still working on the vlogging stuff - I have purchased some software to have a crack at learning editing before I get cracking unleashing my presenting skills onto the unknowing internet. I've set up a Facebook Page, but I will have to get the page address - it's the one with the Paul & The Popcorn logo on of course! And while you are there - don't forget to follow me on Twitter too - @paulandpopcorn if you haven't already. Once I get the youtube up and running I'll bring all the links together.

Also, fancy some free stuff? I've been looking about and I've seen that:

> Google Play is celebrating 3 years of existence - so you can get a free download of Fast and Furious movie (handy since the 7th instalment is being broadcast to a cinema near you in the very near future). Some amendments to this though - a) you will need a google play account that's active (I got this offer through the email) and b) it's not the first one but the one without the "The"'s in it from 2009.

> Origin: If you are registered with Origin you can get a free "on the house" copy of early 1990's classic Syndicate for free download for a limited time.

>  PSN: PS Plus this month has updated now and the new roster of games for the PS formats are:
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes And Punishments and Papa & Yo on PS3 and Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty (what?!) and Valiant Hearts: The Great War on PS4.
If you're into multi format there is also OlliOlli2: Welcome To Olliwood bundled for PS4/Vita and the triple bundle for all three of a game called CounterSpy. Of course these are active while your subscription is and will cease working if you are not a member.
PSN Store also have a special offer on Final Fantasy games for the moment too - do now's your time to get some of those FF gaps in your collection filled. As always, these are for a limited time and access/costs may be dependent on whether you are a subscriber or not so check first before purchase.

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month hosts the full game of Tomb Raider on XBOX 360 and for the posh 'uns who have XBOX ONE you are treated to Rayman Legends and #IDARB to download free if you are a subscriber.

Also I've signed up to Star Wars Online - that is, The Old Republic AKA SWTOR so if you'd like to join me on there - add paulosolo and you can explore the galaxy with me. I have been playing it this week and am at the grand old rank of level 10. I'm a Jedi Sentinel so it means I can use two lightsabers. That's gotta be good, hasn't it? If you play - let me know what you think.

Anyway that's enough update for now; hopefully next week I will get my rather fetching Paul & The Popcorn T-Shirt, but who knows?

Until next time

Paul

BYTE: Mighty March - or, to some, St David's Day

Hey guys

Welcome to March - a month that came quickly and is full of excitement for me.
As February left us behind - with some interesting film releases (including the hyped to heck Fifty Shades of Grey and Jupiter Ascending) and my first comic-con of the year at Teesside Unleashed 5.
We had the BRIT awards with Madonna's slip and sadness with the passing of Leonard Nimoy, our honorary grandfather. #LLAP

My blog is getting more views and I'm working behind the scenes to set up my youtube channel and getting everything in place for that. Also I'm going to no less than 2 conventions this month including the Sci Fi Weekender which I'm really looking forward to.

There's more film releases this month too - including Divergent Series: Insurgent among others.

I've signed up to subscribe to Star Wars Online - that is, The Old Republic AKA SWTOR so if you'd like to join me on there - add paulosolo and you can explore the galaxy with me.

Looking at the latest stuff as well:

>   Xbox Live:  Games with Gold this month hosts the full game of Tomb Raider on XBOX 360 and for the posh 'uns who have XBOX ONE you are treated to Rayman Legends and #IDARB to download free if you are a subscriber.
>  PSN: PS Plus this month hasn't really updated just yet but as of today you have Thief and Yakuza 4 on PS3, Kick and Fennick for the Vita and Transistor and Apotheon on PS4. If you're into multi format there is also a game called Rogue Legacy that you can download for all three. Of course these are active while your subscription is and will cease working if you are not a member.

As always we have Loot Crate and Nerd Block unboxings to look forward to. The themes look ace this month and, if you subscribe to Arcade Block (Nerdblock's sister service) you will get 2 t-shirts this month. I'm thinking of taking advantage of that exclusive offer.

Anyway I've wrote enough now - have a MEGA MARCH and I'll see you soon.

Until next time

EVENTS: Middlesbrough's Comic Con - Teesside Unleashed 5

Middlesbrough's Teesside Unleashed 5 Comic Con, organised by Hunter Toys was such a busy day - and it seems, very successful too. Guest of honour was Jeremy Bulloch, who is famous for playing Star Wars' bounty hunter Boba Fett in both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It ran for one day only on Saturday, 7th February 2015 and was on from 11.00-16.30.  We were a bit late arriving and we had to wait in a queue to get in - but it went down quickly and everyone was in high spirits. Whilst in the queue we got to interact with some characters from various franchises - there were Storm Troopers, a Wookie, a few Dr Who's and a Judge Dredd who booked the guy in the queue in front of me. He got three months probation for "excessive happiness".  Closer to the front we saw an Ewok, Mara Jade brandishing a pink lightsaber and a few other Star Wars characters dotted around.

Teesside had come out in force today - the car parks were full and people were dressing up too. We saw a few mini Thors and Spidermen there - one thing is for certain, if the world was in danger we were very safe indeed.

Inside was busy - but had plenty of things to buy, collect, interact with and marvel at. These included novellists, artisan products and creative things like framed Lego characters and film cells.  There were a lot of vendors - but much of them had a very biased Star Wars slant, due to the guest of honour. I found a young lady called Gemma May selling some art prints she had drawn herself and they were stunning. She asked £5 for each one, and her Boba Fett ones sold out almost immediately. I am the world's biggest Iron Man fan, so had to buy the Iron Man print from her. She said that she also does commissions and that if there were any heroes (or villains) that you wanted drawing she could do them for a fee. I was really impressed by her art - check out her Facebook page and see if you agree - https://www.facebook.com/gemmamayart (there's a kinda Iron Man image like mine on that page too).

Who Ya Gonna Call?
Brickshire, obviously.
Some organisations attended too - these include the fabulous Brickshire - Yorkshire Lego Group with some amazing Lego designs. These ranged from scenes out of famous films to creative endeavours like spaceships and the like. One of my favourite was the 3D Ghostbusters logo (left) which I thought was really inspired.

Other film related Lego constructs included a few cool Lord Of The Rings scenes including one in the Shire and one battling the Balrog. There were a few Harry Potter ones too - and they were brilliant. They were definitely on a par with the Star Wars ones my brother and I saw at LEGOLAND last September.

Round the corner from here there was another stall selling framed Lego mini-figures that quotes related to the mini figures. So they may have been a Darth Vader one saying "I am your father!" or a Gandalf one saying "Bilbo, the ring is still in your pocket!" for example. I'm sure that's not exactly what it said, but that is my favourite quote from Lord of the Rings! There was an awesome 6 figure Avengers one too!

If Lego wasn't your bag you could check out the Tony Stark "Hall Of Armors" - featuring two static Iron Man armours and one that was being cosplayed by someone as both Iron Patriot and Iron Man himself. I reckon there was a vibranium shield in the style of Captain America kicking around there too - if that picture on the right has anything to do with it. I took the picture  while I was waiting in the queue to see Jeremy Bulloch so I didn't have much of a leeway on getting a good shot. Talking about the queue, Jeremy Bulloch was very popular indeed and was posing for photos and signing stuff for everyone. I got to meet him and he was a lovely man, and I even got a signed photo to take away with me.

Keeping in with the Star Wars theme there was also a scene where, for a price you could pose with Jabba the Hutt - but sadly there were no slave- Leia's to be seen. There was a lot of Star Wars cosplaying too - and I got to have a photo with some of them (see below). To round off the day there was a Cosplay Competition which featured a Mandalorian Soldier, two Jack Sparrows (and very good they were too), Shrek and Fiona and Lady Deadpool to name a few. Every single person was happy to pose and have photos taken with you if you asked.

Teesside Unleashed 5 was a fab day out - it literally cost £3 entry and was really good fun. It was a good start to my Comic Con Calendar - and they are coming back in October - if you fancy going here's the current link.
